La Parrilla Mexican Restaurant Menu

Lets go with 2.5 stars...meh...maybe 3. La Parilla is one of those restaurants where there's going to be one dish that sticks out, and the others will be left in the dust. Out of the three times I have taken out, I have had four dishes, one of those turned out to be, not as authentic, yet exceptional. Chile Rellenos- For some reason, I wasn't impressed with this dish. It seemed to heavy, and the peppers didn't seem to blend in with the rest of the food. Burrito- Not impressed with this. The tortilla and the meat was dry; no flavor. Tamales- VERY DISAPPOINTED. I've traveled all over the country and have been fortunate enough to belong to a culture(s) to have exceptional cuisine. The best food is the one that takes all day to make! Tamales are one of those dishes. Though tamales are different in all parts of many Hispanic cultures, GOOD tamales are supposed to be soft, not dry, and with a kick. You should also know what kind of meat you're eating, too. With these tamales, the maza (coating) and the...meat (beef? pork?) was dry. Rarely have I seen the mole sauce cover the tamales, and that in itself was spicy but not flavorful. These tamales didn't taste as if they were made with the time and effort other tamales are. I would go as far to say that I would take a frozen tamale from a local Schnucks over this mess. EDIT: So, I realized two things about these tamales. When I got them, they were kinda warm and stiff. When REALLY heated them (after I wrote this review). It was better. The meat was still dry and sub-par, but the maza (too much, really) was soft and edible. It also makes me wonder if I got it at the resturant, would it still taste the same? I got this as take out, and there is no way I should have to reheat take out--and yes, I live 5 minutes from this place so its not as if it is cooled considerably. That's silly. It also doesn't help that their food comes in aluminum containers so you can't just willi-nillie heat it up ASAP. Arroz con pollo- When I think of arroz con pollo, I think of a whole peice of chicken on top of a bed of rice. This rice typically has your standard vegetables, corn, beans, etc. AT LP, they cut tiny pieces of chicken up and serve it with cheesy rice, sour cream, lettuce, tomato, broccoli and cauliflower. At first bite, I wasn't fond of it but it grew on me and I love it. No, its not your typical arroz con pollo but its still worth trying, as it has a very fresh and clean taste. My only problem is that with this dish, the chicken needs to cook along with the rice, but in this dish, the chicken and the rice were cooked differently-- at least it tasted like it. Other than that, the place seemed nice. My other complaint is that the lady said that the tamales were 1.99 but when I got there she said that it was 2.29. She said she was sorry, but, if she gets the $ wrong, I think I deserve to get my food at the price I thought it was. I was so lucky I went in the restaurant with an extra couple of dollars because if I didn't, I wouldn't have had enough money to pay :( My meal has always come with their salsa and chips. They're your standard kind, I suppose, though, I prefer Tostidos with my awesome mango salsa. I don't hate this place, but my opinion of it goes down the more I go. I'll try somewhere else next time.

This place has kind of gone down hill. All the Mexican food in this area tastes the same. The frozen mango margaritas are great, though!

I love this place. I've been a frequent customer for about 5 years now. The buffet is amazing. That's what I usually get. Tonight I had the $4.99 house jumbo margarita and fajita beef nachos and it blew my mind. The waitress was not terrible. She forgot a few things but was really sweet. I've had much worse service at many higher priced, less delicious places. When I go for the buffet, the dude who may be the owner always recognizes me and greets me with a huge smile. Love it love it love it!

Good deal for a lunch buffet. I just drip cheese on my entire meal! Decent prices, waiters are always fast to refill your drinks.

This is one of my favorite restaurants and my fiance and I eat here often. We like it because it's quaint, the food is good, and you just feel like family when you're there. Everyone is super nice and the food and drinks are fairly priced. I won't say the food is the best mexican food I've ever had, but the service is always great, the food is pretty good, and for us...it just feels good to go there.

Did a late night dinner after a movie. Location is great, right across the street from the theater. Nicely decorated with Spanish music playing. Service was great, our server was very attentive to us, but I must add that there were only 2 other tables due to the hour we came in. Salsa was very good with chunks of fresh tomato and onion. Food was really good too, rice was tasty with carrot chunks and peas. Huge portions for the $$. My friend said his tamales were good and my burrito was smothered in enchilada sauce and cheese, very Old El Paso for the enchilada sauce, good thing I like that. Overall good experience and good food. I would go back for convenience if we were on that side of town and didn't want to drive to El Cerrito.

Yes, it's average American/Mexican food, but it's the best in the area by far so I have to give it 5 stars. I ALWAYS have to add salt and lime to any guacamole I get and I don't have to do that at La Parilla which tells me the cooks actually have a palate. Everything is relatively fresh, well seasoned and just plain good. Service is good. It's not going to taste like a Taqueria or Taco truck in Cali, but it's the best you're gonna get in Southern Illinois.

What can I say? Excellent food, friendly staff, and excellent prices. And to think it's been here, under our noses, less than two miles from our house the whole time! Try their pork tamales! They are fantabulous! This is definitely a top ten favorite spot at our household....

Not good. Low quality food. Bad service. Nothing much redeeming here. Will not be returning to eat here again. Plenty of other Mexican options in the area that are much, much better.

Quick and easy. Not the best. But the prices were great. Had a beer and some chips and salsa at the bar while I waited. Chatted with the owner. It was mellow and easy. Not the best, definitely not the worst.

This is one of our favorite "cheap" Mexican places. They have great margaritas and have daily specials. You can get a pitcher and still eat for $30 for 2. Fajitas are good and the quesadillas are big enough for a meal. Servers are always really nice!

Yum! Get the fajitas, they are the best. This is a low key place. Good food and easy service. The prices are great, too. Don't try to ask for substitions, sometimes things get lost in the translation.

Truth in advertising, this is our favorite local mexican place. Sure the food is not the best mexican we have ever had and the place is not the most appealing; however, we enjoy the food and frankly that is all that matters. The service is average but the price is more than right. We like the $6.50 lunch buffet on weekdays and enjoy the chimichangas and fajitas. Again, there are a ton of mexican choices in the metro east area but this one is ours.

La Parrilla is quickly becoming by favorite lunch time spot when in the Metro east. Their lunch buffet is a tremendous value for only $6.99. The buffet includes the traditional Mexican fare, however the highlight is the quality ground beef that is seasoned perfectly. This offers a great overall value, with great fast service. I believe that this is a family owned operation, the staff has always been friendly here. I cannot comment on the entrees because I have only been here for lunch, however I would like to return one evening for dinner and drinks.

I ate here for dinner once and I wasn't really impressed. They were nice, the decor was standard, but the food just wasn't meeting my Southern California girl needs. The food seemed spicy and not very eventful. Today, however I went for the lunch buffet and was happily pleased. They had a good variety, especially for someone who doesn't eat meat with bones or pork. The food was hot and fresh. About $10 a person. The buffet really redeemed themselves for me. I especially liked the chimichanga and queso sauce.

After reading Erin J's review, I have to type in my opinion of this ridiculous so called Mexican restaurant. My comment will not be towards the food cause it was ok. My target is to the worst restaurant servers we have ever encountered. Seriously, this place should just do take out service since they do not have knowledge in customer service. I am amazed that the owner(s) would allow them to behave poorly. We had decided on Mexican food which was agains my own better judgment. But, I was out voted so we drove out to Parrilla. I wanted Chevy's. Go in and was seated accordingly. Hell took over from here. Waited on drinks for ever. Food was a long time wait but good. drinks were never refilled without asking. The male waiters would behave like typical foreign waiters. We decided not to return to this place. I just wish there was a no star rating.

After walking in and being seated, we waited about 40 minutes for our two dips to come out (we didn't order any entrees). My water went empty and stayed that way for quite some time. They never checked on us to make sure our order tasted all right and the the food tasted incredibly bland. Having been here before, I expected the same quality I had received before and they did not deliver. I will not be returning.

Here's the thing. I want to give this place more stars. I do. The food was your average American-Mexican but with a few more vegetarian options than usual, which a is why they get a star and I'm okay with that. But the service is absurdly bad. Like, ridiculously bad. And a tossed off "Sorry for your wait" from the waitress, who is pointedly not making eye contact, is not good enough. Other tables, that came in later, ordered and had refills before we had our first drinks. Parts of the order didn't come and no apologies were forthcoming when we pointed that out, it took *forever* to get the parts of our order that did get to our table and the manager got ridiculously flustered when his credit card machine went down. We stood there for 15 minutes while he said "I don't know what to do" and tried to run cards repeatedly until I suggested that he call the customer service line. Eventually, tiring of the waitress pushing us out of the way, we went and got cash to pay the bill and fled into the night, never ever to return.

Awesome flan! Worth the price o the lunch buffet for the flan alone. the taquitos are really good. But do not miss the chicken Jalisco soft tacos! The pico de gallo is fresh made as well.

Have you ever politely challenged a waiter about something not correct on your bill and be treated like you're a bother? This time, it took 4 employee's (all with unfriendly look on their face) to correct the small problem (overcharging for my kids meal) That's happened to me twice at this place. I should have learned my lesson the first time. I will not go back. The only reason I went the second time is because the food is decent (I still feel that way). And I love the flan that comes with the buffett. That one item alone is worth half the cost.

Food is average, nothing to make it stand out over other local options. Service (5 times now) has been rude every time. The staff does not take care of your needs.

  • Jason F.

The seating area is small and the tables are tiny, meaning a family with kids can barely fit in. The wait staff are not the most attentive in the world. I absolutely hate the Mexican rice, which has peas and corn mixed in. Offers a military discount.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
